Allhallowtide 2024

Halloween, Thursday, October 31: No known traditional Masses for the Vigil of Hallowmas (pre-1955 Missal). The normal Thursday Mass schedules, reproduced below, will be followed, and TLMs offered will reflect the 1962 Missal, in which October 31, 2024, is a feria after the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost. (N.B. Sunday, October 27, 2024, being the last Sunday in October, will be celebrated as the Feast of the Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ.)

Hallowmas, Friday, November 1 (Holyday of Obligation):

A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Holy Souls of Purgatory, is available each day from Hallowmas through its octave (Wed. Nov. 8) to the faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead. The usual conditions apply: on the day of the indulgenced act, or within about 20 days thereof, receiving sacramental confession and Holy Communion, and praying for the traditional intentions of the Holy Father (an Our Father and a Hail Mary are suggested), all with an interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. Should the disposition of detachment from sin be incomplete, a partial indulgence is gained in proportion to the actual degree of detachment.

As outlined in the Raccolta, the six traditional intentions of the Holy Father are: (1) the exaltation of the Church; (2) the propagation of the Faith; (3) the extirpation of heresy; (4) the conversion of sinners; (5) the concord between Christian princes; and (6) the further welfare of the Christian people.

All Souls Day, Saturday, November 2:

In addition to the daily plenary indulgence available from Hallowmas through its octave (Wed. Nov. 8), on All Souls Day there is an additional opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence, again applicable only to the Holy Souls of Purgatory, to the faithful who visit any Catholic church or public oratory and pray at least one Our Father and the Creed. The same usual conditions apply. On this day, each individual may receive either the daily novena indulgence or the specific All Souls Day indulgence, but not both, since under current canon law, one may receive a maximum of one plenary indulgence per day.
